Senior Software Engineer (Back-End) — Qantas, Adelaide

About the Role

Qantas Airways Limited is hiring a Senior Software Engineer (Back-End) for its new Product Innovation Centre in Adelaide. This is a full-time, permanent position. The Adelaide centre is Qantas’s first dedicated innovation hub outside Sydney, opened in September 2026, and is recruiting dozens of digital and technology roles as it grows toward 400+ high-skilled tech jobs over the next three years.

What You Will Do

• Guide and lead the architecture, delivery and development of the backend systems that power Qantas digital experiences
• Build robust, scalable systems supporting seamless customer journeys — from flight booking to managing disruptions
• Take shared responsibility for reliability, performance, security and data privacy of the software built
• Mentor junior developers and work hands-on to deliver high-quality, well-designed software

What You Will Bring

• 6+ years in a hands-on software engineering role
• Strong experience building high-traffic backend applications with Java, Spring/Spring Boot and/or Node.js, plus databases such as PostgreSQL or DynamoDB
• Understanding of cloud-native development on AWS, containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), CI/CD pipelines and version control
• Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Splunk or Datadog
• A passion for quality, clean code and continuous improvement
